Just saying the words peanut butter and chocolate in the same sentence will make my mouth start to salivate. When I was thinking about the perfect birthday cake, I knew I wanted a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. But I also knew I wanted a boozy cake that would make my quarantine birthday special.
Being a curious person, I asked myself the question, “What is the best pairing for alcohol and peanut butter?” I googled every combination of “best pairing for peanut butter and alcohol” I could think of. There was no definitive taste test online that I could find, so I knew I had to do a taste test myself to discover the best pairing for alcohol and peanut butter.
The first taste test I did was with vodka and peanut butter. I like vodka and I thought this would be my favorite. In fact, I thought it might taste like a peanut butter martini. (I love chocolate martinis!) I was actually surprised when I tasted the vodka and peanut butter together and realized that the flavors weren’t mixing. This wasn’t a “peanut butter cup” scenario, where the chocolate and peanut butter are two separate flavors that taste better when combined. Instead, this was a case of each flavor staying in its own lane and not combining into a cohesive new flavor. I could taste the vodka and I could taste the peanut butter…but there was no new “vodka and peanut butter” flavor. I rated this a 6 out of 10.
The second taste test was with rum and peanut butter. I like rum less than vodka. Rum is made from sugarcane so the rum and peanut butter flavors did mesh better than the vodka and peanut butter … but I still didn’t love the combination of rum and peanut butter. I rated this a 7 out of 10.
My final taste test was with whiskey and peanut butter. I used a Scotch whiskey, because that’s what I had in my liquor cabinet. I don’t really like whiskey so I wasn’t sure what I would think of this taste combination. Much to my surprise, I loved the combination of whiskey and peanut butter. In the video, you can see the surprise on my face. Who knew it would be so good? The two flavors immediately combined to make something better, which was my hope from the beginning. The peaty flavor from the whiskey did something special to the peanut butter.
So what is the best pairing for alcohol and peanut butter? Whiskey and peanut butter!
