Wine for Beginners

Jul 27, 2020

Learning wine can be like learning a sport, which is why I developed this wine for beginners course. After all, every sport has its distinct lingo. When I married a Brazilian and watched my first soccer match (uh, futball, sorry), I had no clue what they were talking about. It was like being at a dinner party where everyone else spoke a different language. If you’ve ever felt like that with wine, you have come to the right place. I will help you demystify wine in a fun and relaxed way. After all, wine and food have been a part of the human culture for thousands of years. Wine is meant to be fun!

Wine for Beginners

Here is an overview of a wine for beginners course. Each link below will take you to a more detailed description of that wine for beginners lesson.
  1. The 4 S’s of Wine–See, Smell, Swirl, Sip
  2. The emotional and physiological reasons why you like one type of wine over another
  3. How to Read a Wine Label – Wine Labels Old World Versus New World
  4. Why do wine experts use such crazy words to describe wine? I mean “pencil lead”??? Really!
  5. Why should I care about pairing wine with food?

Body Styles

A wine’s body style is how heavy it feels in your mouth. For example, water is light in your mouth, milk is heavier, and cream is the heaviest. Click here to see a fun “milk test” video that explains this in detail.

  1. Light-bodied
  2. Medium-bodied
  3. Full-bodied (heavy)

Grape Varieties – The Big 8

There are more than 10,000 different grape varieties in the world, but only a few dozen of these have achieved widespread name recognition. Out of these few dozen, there are only eight that are kings in the wine world. Here are the Big 8 grape varieties, along with their typical body style.

  1. Riesling: Light-bodied
  2. Sauvignon Blanc: Medium-bodied
  3. Chardonnay: Full-bodied
  4. Pinot Noir: Light-bodied
  5. Merlot: Medium-bodied
  6. Cabernet Sauvignon: Medium-bodied
  7. Syrah: Full-bodied
  8. Malbec: Full-bodied
